They were told by the British they had to surrender rule to the majority (read:blacks) in order to receive independence. They told the British to fuck off (Blacks and whites).
A communist-funded, black supremacist rebel group began attacks. They countered with the best counter-insurgency ever seen in the world, and held them off for far longer than anyone expected. All the while, working together with heir native blacks. The two races working together to defend Rhodesia.
When they finally agreed to a new government, they were betrayed, raped and murdered. The new government fell swiftly to Mugabe's dictatorship, which hunted the whites out of the country.
Rhodesia was once the breadbasket of Africa, a place well on its way to being a significant power in not just Africa but the world. They were betrayed by everyone, and still held out. Truly, an amazing group of people.

Too young to have been born in Rhodesia but I was born in Zimbabwe and lived there while things weren't completely awful but you could see the dark ages coming.
From about 2000 to 2008 it was a downfall that slowly gathered momentum until it hit rock bottom and has spent the last 8 years trying to get back up but keeps falling over like some kind of retarded child with broken legs.

Basically attrition. You can only fight a war for so long when you only have one ally, are surrounded by people who support your enemies and have close to zero international support and trade.
Portugal had been an ally when they still ran Mozambique but after they left ZANLA (Mugabe's ilk) started launching attacks from the mountains in Mozambique into Rhodesia.
South Africa helped a lot, sending soldiers and police officers, as well as selling weapons and other supplies, but eventually they caved under international pressure and the constant ANC trouble within their own borders.
Eventually Ian Smith just had to face the fact that the war was unwinnable. You could win every battle and kill hundreds of hoets a month, but there would always be more and the Russians and Chinese would just keep selling them more and more guns. The Rhodesians won the war but lost the politics.

Harare, but moved to a small farm in a rural town about half an hour out of the city. White population about 20. Black population about 2000.
We had a lot of really cool little community built around the local golf course. I didn't really have a lot of friends in that community because I was one of the younger kids and everyone else was either an adult or late teens.
Atmosphere was alright mostly. It's not Somalia with people walking around with guns and violent shit happening everyday. The local Africans, Shona, are actually a fairly friendly tribe, unlike the Zulus in SA. You still had to watch yourself, of course, but I never really worried about being murdered in the streets. I was tied up and robbed while at a friend's house once though and crime is a big issue but never as violent and horrific as some of the SA stories you'll hear. The burglars threatened to kill his baby sister unless we told them where the guns and money were. They stole his car and fucked off. The farm invasions got pretty nasty though.
My family left in 2006. I've joined the Australian army as a reservist so I'm qualified with the F88 and the Minimi. Fired an old Rhodie FN FAL while in Zim in 2013 once too.
