I'm from Houston and I'm quite fond of it, though we're having some growing pains at the moment. Nothing compared to Austin, which is overcrowded as fuck. Parts of Corpus are nice but generally it's kind of dirty and there's really not much going on there. I'm really not a fan of Dallas. The people I've dealt with there seem stuck up phony, trying too hard to be the "cosmopolitan" Texas city without actually offering anything substantial. Real Housewives is doing a show there and I think that's entirely appropriate. Austin has it's charm but it's really been oversold as this quirky cool paradise in the middle of redneck Texas. Texan here, normally I would encourage conservatives to go ahead and move here, but so fucking many people have been moving here non-stop since the economy took a shit, that house prices keep going up, HOAs are popping up everywhere, so are apartment buildings, rent is going up all over the place, land is going up, there are crowds of people fucking EVERYWHERE, the traffic has grown so much worse, there are fewer jobs available + the wages are not increasing due to employee competition, I mean seriously, its bad. Texas resident, born in Dallas, lived in North Texas all my life.
North of Dallas, all the way up to Lake Texoma is pretty white. Even then, the nigs and mexicans are actually cool, if you stay in middle-class and above neighborhoods. Watch out for audi and SUV driving yuppies, who drive with a more-important-than-you attitude, and also try to avoid mexi-jank rides on I-35.
Cost of living is unbeatable, you can buy a decent house for 150-200K, women are fine as hell, great food, music, arts, culture... it's pretty much all fantastic.
Lots of people carry (myself included), and I would say that yes, people are genuinely friendly here, but also part of what keeps everything civil is the shared undercurrent of "I'm absolutely willing to fight you if you fuck up in here."
Been all over, Texas is home, and I like it the best.
