They are officially separate Royal families and we could eg change our succession laws so that eg William became the next monarch of Australia while Charles became the next monarch of the UK.
Similarly, do a bit of reading before you comment. The Australian constitution wasn't 'written by the UK when we were still a penal colony'. First off, we were never 'a colony', we were six. Second, the last time one of the colonies (WA) accepted any convicts was in the 1860s.
