It will do the job just as well, the serrated part on that bear grills knife is mainly useful for cutting rope and since you need a "legitimate" reason it's unlikely you will be carrying around camping or hunting gear. But take the Bahco mora, a small box of fishing lures, sinkers and floats and a little hand real and now you're just carrying some fishing gear because you're a fishing enthusiast.
Another idea is a simple one, take a bike padlock and a bandanna and throw them in your bag, separately they are just a couple of harmless items. Tie the bandanna around the lock and you have yourself a handy black jack that can be used to smash heads.
There's plenty of options but just be smart about it and never tell the cops you have anything for "self defense".
Remember "legitimate use" you have to have one to avoid problems with the law.

If the knife is just for at home then the legality doesn't really matter all two much. You can carry any hunting knife, machete, bat etc next to your bed.
