Normally this takes the form of surviving nature, getting a job, house, wife, children, etc. When the young boomers were born into a paradise that provided all of these things for little effort, their minds started grasping for some other challenge. Thus the civil rights movement began. It's so easy to preach about love, tolerance, and equality when your parents handed you the world and you've never known how harsh reality usually is.
