The bitumen in the group can't actually set on fire or fuel the fire. Abasand was once an old open pit mine for tarsand as well, the place burned really badly, did the oil fuel the fire? NOPE. The only worry about the fire reaching the sites themselves is the release of heavy chemicals into the air from processing plants.
Just to point out, the oilsands itself is a heavy oil when extracted that is used in machine oil or diesel. The small percentage of the oil extracted can be used for petrol or kerosene.
There is a lot more to worry about than sulfur or oil catching on fire.
