The thing about the Democratic system is that it's even more designed to prevent an outside candidate from getting in- even if Bernie had gotten 51% of the votes they'd probably still have voted for Hillary and they would have used the excuse that Bernie only joined the Democrats in order to run for president as the excuse to maintain power.
