There are generally two flavors of the nationalism:

The latter is the kind that emerged in the US following the Civil War, then sped up as politicans started importing foreign labor to build their railroads and settle then industrialize the western frontier. It's the kind of nationalism that you hear when David Cameron tells Brits that someone from North Africa is British after they sign some paperwork, etc. It's the assimilationist kind of nationalism, that the country is a "melting pot".
Obviously, there are people who think that's all nonsense; that there has to be a certain degree of racial, cultural, and linguistic homogeneity for a strong nation state to endure and succeed.
