Part of the answer lies in the massive inequality between the west of the Ukraine and its east. The western part of the country has good white collar jobs, good infrastructure, and good services. The eastern part of the country is mostly blue collar work, has a shitty infrastructure, and shitty services. Yet the eastern portion of the country is also mostly ethnic Russian / Russian speaking, facts that are hated by the western portion of the country which has an unhealthy obsession with the Soviets and the Nazis. Basically the wealthy post-materialist west mistreats the poor realist east.
