Most of northern alberta is boreal forest. Boreal forest fucking *loves* to burn, it's part of the natural forest life-cycle. It's almost all spruce and pine, which burn both hot and fast.
It can be really hard to stop a fire in a boreal forest, partially because it's hard to get out to wherever the fire started, and it requires incredibly quick responses - which didn't happen because notley took all sorts of money out of the budget.
The big thing was that people didn't expect the fire to jump the roads - which is usually a fairly safe assumption. But lack of moisture for the past few years and all sorts of deadfall has lead to 400ft firewalls all over the place.

The fire was discovered on saturday by wildfire crews, and was 2 hectares (5 acres) in size. 4 water bombers and 2 choppers were assigned to the fire within an hour, plus ground crew. Within 2 hours it had grown to 60 hectares (150 acres).
