You have to put the size of the units involved into perspective, there were entire divisions worth of soldiers available at any time and not all of them were on the front line at once, a single battalion spent about 100 days of the year on the front line and would cycle between a support position, a reserve line, a rest period, and leave in the meantime.
It's not like the average unit fought for 4 years straight in the trenches.
