The US economy got its death sentence in 1913. In 2008 it died for real and its been a zombie on life support ever since. There is no recovery, just loads and loads of QE (aka money printing) and market rigging.
The crash is inevitable but you have two choices.
1. Keep going in full speed and hit that mountain wall at 150 mph.
2. Realize that the brakes are gone and crash it into the somewhat soft ditch next to the road and hope you come out alive.
So yes, a default on the debt (that can never ever be paid off) and a somewhat controlled crash would be the absolute best option.
