As for who committed the crime, the truth is somewhere between radicalists funded by Saudis, the state of Isreal (but not Mossad specifically), and a group of Europeans.

I thought of the thermite idea when I learned that several of the janitorial and custodial staff in the towers had gone missing afterwards and were never found. I do believe that it was a terrorist attack funded by Saudis but I do not believe the US had involvement beyond knowledge. Thermite would have caused irregularities in the structure that would not have allowed for a clean collapse renegades of the timing of their detonation. It's not a bad idea but it would have been easier to bring in and hide explosive materials than the amount of thermite needed to actually cause structural damage in a way that benefited the collapse.
