Daily Reminder - MaggieThatcher supported the Afghan Mujahadeen, and personally met with representatives of theirs in the late 80s. The British security services, along with the CIA under Reagen, provided weaponry and money to the Islamists in order to counter the Russians

Here's the video footage of Thatcher addressing a large Pashtun refugee camp and showing her solidarity with the Afghan Jihad.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjNEqR6N6Gs

If you go to 1:03 in the video you can see the footage of hundreds of people in the refugee camp shouting "allah akhbar, takfir!" whilst raising their index finger into the air to voice their approval at her comments

A transcript of the full speech can be found here:

This statement depresses me far more than it should.

My parents know I like UKIP and that I don't like mass immigration but don't really care.
>>
>>73185612

This is incorrect.

Firstly, most mid-term elections take place much later into the governments term than this one - the 2012 elections took place over 2 years into the Tory coalition government, this exactly one year.

As such a mid-term rejection

Secondly, the last time these seats were contested Labour won massively, making 857 gains on a 39% share of the vote. The fact the Tories have been unable to dent this huge lead, and have lost both the overall share of the vote and the overall number of councillors to Labour, as well as being well on their way to losing the most councillors, says that they're very weak. Losing heavily in key marginal constituencies in the South and Midlands (such as Exeter, Southampton, Nuneaton, Redditch, Cannock Chase, Crawley) is bad news for the Tories.

If Sadiq Khan loses by a landslide and Labour can win enough seats in London to give Labour overall net gains (they're currently -24) then it would be a remarkable triumph for a party that pundits were predicting would lose between 150-200 seats less than 24 hours ago.

>They're only gaining more seats in Labour strongholds

Incorrect. The best Labour results of the night have been in Southampton, Nuneaton, Crawley, Exeter, Cannock Chase, Stevenage and Harlow - all areas that are thought of as "bellweather" marginals because these are all places where the Labour party has struggled in the past and where the pollsters had predicted that Labour would suffer badly today.

The only place Labour did badly is Scotland, which co-incidentally is the only place where the Blairites still have dominance over the party.

Labour net losses now down to 20. There's a good chance they might make gains overall once the last of the london results come through, which considering they came off a benchmark of 857 gains in 2012 is pretty impressive. What happened to all those confident predictions of Labour losing hundreds of council seats?

It's comfy, when I was young my mum used to take me to the polling station and let me cross the box.

She's from the north east and even still almost always votes Labour, but she used to let me cross the box for her and even let me choose most of the time (I just used to cross Labour because she liked them and I was a kid so just followed - sometimes I think I did Lib Dem, and in the EU one she just flat out left it to me since she didn't care about the EU).

Even though she's Labour she's voting leave because she hates the EU, and she agrees with me most of the time about when we talk about politics, I think it's just the connection with the north more than anything because she wouldn't consider voting Conservative.

Dad's from Devon and grew up in Kent and I genuinely don't know how he votes most of the time, despite what you'd think he doesn't seem to like the Conservatives and he always keeps it to himself a lot so I think he might vote Labour.

They both agree with me about the awful state of both the parties and the EU (but I think dad is voting remain) but I think they're just of the generation where they stay loyal and have hope in politics still.

My older brother agrees almost entirely with me and is voting leave, too, so there's three out of four of us voting to leave at least.

UKIP's still a bit of a joke to them, though, despite me explaining what they actually are and why they shouldn't believe all the ecks dee social media and cheap standup. I'm pretty sure they've voted in the general based purely on the local candidates (we've had one decent* Labour guy in office or running for the last handful of elections) rather than national, and to them UKIP would be a joke in that regard.

* - as decent as a Labour MP can be, he's rebelled a lot but still a member of the party.

Yup, Blairites, Scottish Labour is a Blairite training school, has been for years.

They gained votes in all those places, 5 councillors off the Tories in Exeter for example, and despite predictions they'd lose hundreds of seats in these areas. They won the largest share of the vote and the most councillors and look on course to break even at the least in terms of overall losses and win the London mayoral election with ease.

They're down on the 2012 result as a share of the vote, but the 2012 result was the best result for Labour in a local election in 40 years, but still beat the Tories overall and in terms of net gains and losses, and won in places which are marginal bellweather seats.

Outside of Scotland the results have been very strong for Labour, defying expectations just like what happened after the Oldham by-election.

>Vote shares down

down from a benchmark of 39%, what was at the time the best local election result for Labour in 40 years. To make significant gains on that score Labour would need to be polling in the mid 40's.

To gain any seats at all from such a high benchmark is a solid achievement and one that is far better than any pollster had predicted.

Furthermore, the places where they've done best include a number of marginal seats which people had expected Labour under Corbyn to lose badly in. This is a bad sign for the Blairites, who need substantial losses in middle england to justify a coup against Corbyn.

>Can you even speak British?
I certainly would not claim to be good at impersonating a British accent. I also know that there's practically infinite different accents all around the country. But I do have a general concept in my head of what a "generic" British accent sounds like, and I project that onto the text I see.

Now an Irish accent, THAT I can not even begin to imitate.

Btw I got fired from my job and I'm day drinking while shitposting on 4chan. Feels bad bro :(

>Scot labour endorsed unilateralism this election

Only because Scots are against Trident and the SNP has used opposition to Trident as a stick to batter the Labour party with from the left.

Dugdale and co. are very much on the right of the party, and Scottish Labour has been a blairite training school for 15-20 years, which is why their members and voters have switched en masse over to the SNP.

Oh yeah, I know it's awful for the blairites. But Corbyn isn't electable so this is actually better for anyone who isn't Labour. Notice how they've kept him out of sight in Scotland, London etc during this race.

Though really with how shit the tories have been and that awful budget they should be doing better.

It is frustrating, but I'm glad that most of us are voting leave. I'm trying to change my dad's mind about it but he doesn't usually like talking openly about politics and seems to consider the shit about muh economic stability.

I'm pretty sure my mum's been arguing and trying to convince the northern half of my family that voting leave is best, I'm not sure how well she's done though. I'm sure a lot of the older ones will be firmly leave, though, just from when I've had conversations with them in the past and when they talk about the country etc.

It was nice that mum used to take me to vote, though, I think it's definitely rubbed off and makes me want to more. I'm doing it if I have kids one day.

It's just a shame that so many still vote tribal nowadays, I've heard so much criticism of Labour and agreement with stuff when I talk to the northern lot but they'll still just vote for them anyway.

Yeah crazily enough. I bet I could have a legitimate legal case against them, but I lack the means and the wherewithal to take it anywhere. Plus even if I regained my job, I'm sure my bosses would hate me for suing them and look for another excuse to fire me.

Liverpool is a weird city. It's one of the largest cities in England and as far as ethnicity goes it's like 90% white (which is pretty high for such a large city). The city has the largest number of Catholics per capita, they hate Muslims, are generally pretty racist but still keep voting Labour. It's like Thatcher and dodging the multicultural bullet under New Labour cemented Labour seats in Merseyside forever for something.

London's first Muslim mayor is Sadiq Khan of the Labour party.

Looks like there'll be a by-election in his seat of Tooting as a result - as Corbyn is strongest in London it's like a pro-Corbyn MP will win the selection.

They're old leftists. Socialist, somewhat socially conservative, and anti-immigration, which is used by capitalists for cheap labour.

Very different to the postmodern, multicultural, feminist, environmentalist, new-left, which arose in the 1970s, which dominates London. The Greens and Cuckbyn are very much New Left.

Identity politics is a core component of Corbyn's appeal. Just look at the whole thing with Livingstone (a close ally of McDonnell and Corbyn) recently, it's the natural outgrowth of the cultural relativism popularised by the new left. UKIP hit around 31% in a poll of working class voters recently. It's no surprise that as the likes of Corbyn continue to dominate the Labour party, the more communitarian voters will move towards parties like UKIP while cosmopolitan leftists like the appeal of Corbyn, who has a far broader aim than simply improving the economic status of the working class.

Corbyn fits perfectly into the "68ers" mould as they're called in France and Germany.
