Becaus China only through off the shackles of feudalism a hundred years ago, then got raped by Japan and a series of western countries in its weak period, then got even more raped by communism. China's actually much better off now in this state capitalism thing we got going on here, but I feel only with further economic liberalization can this place ever become a developed country like Korea. The problem is the government likes foreigners money but is not willing or ready to let the people to fully use their strength in a strong private sector. The economy is very open to foreign investment, but for domestic local businesses to grow is still not easy. Also developing a country that contains a sixth of the world population is no simple feat. You try doing it.

I work in China, and stayed in China fro 10 years when I was a kid (dad worked there).
It's not as bad as people think, it's still much better and cleaner than 20 years ago, especially in cities.
But basically it was Mao who wrecked this country to oblivion.

They never actually admitted capitalism to be better than socialism, Alberto. If they did then they would basically be forfeiting their raison d'être and their Mandate of Heaven. The reason they didn't annex Macau and Hong Kong into the socialist system is because they are indeed successful capitalist economies that make a lot of money. That's a great thing to have in your country. It was also a product of compromise between Britain and China, Britain wasn't just going to give up HK to socialism and the Chinese were not content with the status quo of British rule there, so they came to a compromise which was then applied by precedent in Macau. Also, the Chinese knew or at least think they cannot go from communism to capitalism in a day, look what happened to the Soviet Union. If they did that they would collapse just like what happened with Gorbachev.

Because there's nothing communist about China today anymore except for buzzwords such as "socialism", "social harmony", or "chairman Mao" in their daily political language.
They are not a economical liberal country in the sense that foreign investors can come as they please that easily and open up a store in a small town by himself, but you can still come and bring your laowei money and build factories with local partners.
In fact, I have the feeling that making business in China is MUCH MUCH easier than in France.
And the reason why Macau and HK still keep their laws is because you can't transition suddenly like that, and anyway, these two cities worked pretty well to this point, they don't need further development.
Although Macau is a boring "shithole", as in I'd much rather live in Shanghai or Beijing than Macau.

No, big cities are probably one of the safest place on Earth unless you purposely go into some gangster den but that's the same everywhere, and I'm dead serious. I think the most dangerous things are just drivers because Chinks can't drive for shit, and that's it.

I think that more capitalism, more internal economic freedom is a necessary next step if China is ever to become a developed country in the ranks of Korea and Japan. And I'm not talking about foreign investment, there's enough of that already. Starbucks, Nike and so on are not the answer here. China needs to let its own corporations grow with less and less restrictions, or it'll never stop being anything significant outside of the factory of the world.
