You have to be careful about some self-proclaimed "fascists" who are just egoists. It's normally Communists that really develop into this soulless mass of meaningless individuals.
The Red Army was famous for this as one of their tactics was the sheer fact of manpower. There was no need to promote individual strength because the man was so easily replaceable and so an industry of human flesh was produced.
This can be readily seen in their training. Compare this to the German training regimes and their promotion of the "gruppfuhrer" (group leader) in their formations and you learn that it was all about striving to be great and achieving greatness through loyalty and honor.
