We subsidies all of that. You spend no money on defense because we do it for you. We do literally all medical R&D, raising the price of our own drugs in the process, because it's not profitable at all to do it in any euro nations. Europeans/Canadians come here for degrees because when everyone can go to college for free, standards become lower and European/Canadian degrees become worthless.
Europe and Canada built their success on being capitalist for centuries. Now that you've switched to "socialism" or whatever you call it, you've put a halt on economic growth and you will be dying a slow, slow death. You'd be dying an amazingly quick death if we weren't here preforming triage.
Not to mention the fact that your industry is pretty much gone due to overregulation. It's too expensive to hire people in a social democracy. Once your entire population goes through college, what's going to happen to all those high-level jobs? Do you think there will be any left?

Leafs are too stupid to understand that our runaway defense budget foots the bill for much of NATOs spending on which they are dependent because their modern active military force is laughably small. The fact we are footing the bill for your defense spending is a large part of the reason your country can afford all those social welfare programs and you're still fucking your budget up.
Also the military industrial complex is an artificial economy which is at the moment essential to maintaining the constant growth our, and as the holders of the worlds reserve currency by extension the rest of the western worlds, economy is dependent on. The moment we pull the money out of our defense spending that market bubble is going to collapse and the fallout is going to make the housing crisis, whose ripples were felt the world over, look like a bump in the road.
Together Greece and Poland contribute more to your defense spending in to form of NATO funding than you do, fucking Greece. Maybe if Canada would pull their God damn weight we could afford to be a welfare state as well.
