Bong is right. Just like CK or EU. Fighting in anything other than plains or such is a terrible idea. Baiting them into a Mountain for a defensive fight is much better. Also the Generals or Admirals you have is more important than the numbers.
There's alot that goes into the combat. But it's hardly random.

Pay attention to:
-Troop types (Heavy Infantry beat out Light Infantry in pretty much every way--you can still get rekt with 3v1 odds if your enemy has HI and a decent commander and you have LI)
-Morale
-The Martial skill of your leader
-The Terrain you're in (Woods, hills, and river crossings by the attacker all give the defender a bonus)
-What time of year it is (Winter will fuck you up)
Be sure to have a leader on each flank if you have troops on that flank. Don't try to storm a castle unless you have at least five times as many troops as the defenders AND a decent general with them.

Anyways yes. It's a Grand Strat game, you'd expect them to have different units for different races or tech levels. The combat and units are half of the entire game.
And I've worked briefly for game companies, not paradox but I still have 4 soft years in the industry. The art department is always a skelly crew and the work they produce doesn't even take half a day.

anyone who had the Seduction focus would fuck absolutely every woman within range. All of them. There was no cooldown on attempting seduction so if they got turned down they'd just immediately try again until every the most chaste woman would fuck them. You'd get married and end up with like 10 kids and if you were lucky one of them might even be yours. Your only hope to avoid being cucked was to marry a celibate woman for stats and then take Seduction yourself and secure heirs by cucking everyone else and then admitting it and legitimizing whichever one of your dozens of bastard children turned out best.

Stewardship is prone to give you stats like "stressed" and "depressed". It's useful if you want to kill yourself. There are some weird events for some focus lines like going insane (the scholarship one? not sure) and whatnot. Most of the time I just go with some intrigue focus that lets me bail people out and lets me spy on people for free. Can't remember the name of the trait right now though.

It looks like it might be a fun game but there's no way I'll be paying for it. Not with Paradox's track record. Knowing them it'll release broken, have 26 pieces of DLC after just 6 months, and end up in worse condition after a year and 10 patches than it was on launch.

It scales really well from the start of your adventure where you're basically a fucking peasant all the way until you're the god-emperor of Calradia. It's one of the few things Turks have made that isn't total shit.
