If the fire gets to the processing facilities and destroys them, Canada will no longer be able to process the oil sands into useful oil. As that is a significant part of their economy, losing that equipment will screw them over something fierce. If the fire goes north, there's a large amount of exposed elemental sulfur on the ground that is a byproduct of the oil sands processing that has the potential to melt and burn. Edmonton created 50% of the jobs in CANADA last year. Those jobs are all either a direct, or indirect result of the oil development in Ft. Mac. This is going to absolutely wreck our economy for a while.
Plants in the area have already begun to shutdown and evacuate their employees. Nexen evacuated their people out of their Long Lake facility, for example. That alone means one major facility is not producing at all right now, and potentially may be destroyed.
