Based on the few minutes I've been able to watch of John Oliver without having to switch off before I tear my fucking eyes out, I'd say that the most tell-tale sign of how weak left-liberal humor actually is is that it can't be left-liberal AND humor at the same time.
If you analyse Oliver's technique - well, his HBO writers' technique closely - it's basically just alternation between heavy, po-faced, utterly humorless left-lib agitprop and fluffy-light, very mildly comical allusions to other TV shows or other snippets of pop culture - but all done at such a speed that his short-attention-span, clickbait-raised liberal audience doesn't even notice that he is alternating between one sort of discourse and another completely different sort.
