In first-past-the-post voting, a third party candidate leeches more votes from the candidate they agree with the most than the candidate they agree with the least, guaranteeing that they receive less representation than the ideological preferences of the voter would suggest. If there are 50 people on team purple and 40 people on team orange, then the country clearly wants a purple leader - but if team purple splits their vote 30-20 between violent and lavender, then the country ends up with an orange leader. It's a system that strongly incentivizes all voters to organize themselves into two massive, unwieldy coalitions.
By the FOURTH presidential election, our founding fathers had divided into two political parties and those two parties won every single delegate in the race and every single delegate voted exactly as their party instructed them to. A system like our's just cannot work.
I mean basically it comes down to this electoral college business doesn't it? My understanding is that someone HAS to win 50% or more or it just goes to the House and they pick the president right? Which means that any third party would just leach off the red or blue candidate, whomever they're closer to. Eliminate the 50% rule and give the presidency to the majority and you at least open the door.

If Bernie Sanders was to somehow get the nomination then you could easily see President Bloomberg. He would be a moderate in between two proven lunatics and he has a shit tonne of his own cash he could spend.
