If you read the accounts of early British explorers (like Henry Morton Stanley) they talk at length about how the blacks lived where they had literally never seen white people before, let alone been exposed to "civilisation". They occupied all the arable farmland, but they were small subsistence villages that were born and lived and died in the same 50 miles.
