I own a Prius. It has an 8 gallon tank. While it does get a bit more ranger per fill than a normal 12-14 gallon car that gets 25-30mpg, it is not exactly a huge difference. Prii would have run out of gas as well. They cannot sit parked in traffic and just not burn any fuel. The air conditioner alone consumes 5 amps, which will drain the battery from full to empty in about 15 minutes, requiring an engine start. And this is if you are parked. If you are moving in stop and go, the battery will empty in a matter of minutes or less, requiring the engine to run to move the car. Having a Prius doesn't mean you can drive around in a crisis on empty and make it 200km.
