Liberal here. Something I never understood about other people on the left is that they villify anyone who has any sense of patriotism. Why is that? I might not agree with Trump on most things but I can see how he actually does care about America. And somehow consistently if anyone shows support for their home country they're hated for it. Why? What's so bad about loving your own country?

I'm a liberal too and I find plenty to hate on both sides, but in the end I find that left imposes itself less than the right.
As for your question, it's probably just guilt. The left has an infatuation with the Oppression Olympics where the most oppressed get to have the most pride and the least oppressed get to have the most guilt. Americans are pretty privileged people (that's actually a fact) and some people find it something to be proud of and others to be guilty about.
You also have to examine the role of patriotism and the draft.
The Left's overall mission is to break down traditional society. Of course leftists are anti-American.

Because patriotism leads to nationalism leads to "racism", "xenophobia" leads to the Holocaust, etc. and is antithetical to the idea of creating one big world where there are no national boundaries and "liberating" it of "harmful" national norms. Basically they think patriotism can lead to imperialism, discrimination and people getting behind atrocities done by their country purely out of love for their nation. Also it goes against the doctrine of equality I guess. If everyone and everything should be treated equally, then there's no reason to treat your nationality and country better.
To be more cynical, if you want to reform a country to suit a certain ideology, you have to strip its inhabitants from beliefs and standards that prevent that from happening. And that is usually either national/cultural identity and pride, or religion. Once people have nothing to believe in strongly, no attachment to their heritage and culture, no sense of belonging, they have nothing to commonly rally behind against an external threat and it's easier to take over and implement your own without opposition.
