My understanding of the norse mythology is that they are stories people would share. "praying" and "sacrifices" weren't the type of worship Germanic people had.
Its similar to what developed around 150 years ago, "Heldensagen". They are collections of stories and legends of heroes, how mortals or gods did heroic things usually taught to children.
