Mortgage interest rates are deductable, yes, but as someone who owns a house and just paid taxes, I can tell you it's not always a factor. I still ended up taking the standard deduction because in the end it was the same amount of money (within a hundred, actually).
This year I'll likely be itemizing it, because we're paying a little more.
But right now the bottom income tax is 10% and anyone who makes minimum wage will pay that, and then 15% of anything over 8k.

It allows the bottom earners you gave it to to have more influence over what businesses and industries grow. But, because the economy hasn't grown at all, this means you're taking money that might have been spent one place and causing it to be spent elsewhere.
