It's an anime site. It's just like any discussion site: there is a primary topic of discussion broken down into sections.
There are also a number of off-topic sections. As with any older discussion site, these tend to be massively overpopulated and people use them more than anything else.
The point is that the community is "focused" around anime, even if we're here almost exclusively for something else. Anime is welcome and it's always on-topic.

The people here like anime. Total thread derailment is standard on 4chan. I didn't hear people complaining about anime here until a couple of years ago (I guess it's mainly newfags?), but more importantly I don't think people realize just how easily threads are derailed by just about anything.
It's normal. It comes with the territory. Anime isn't at fault. It's actually the mark of a community mostly populated by males, when having lengthy personal discussions they tend to change topics very rapidly. It's part of human speech, and the very fast pace of discussion here means 4chan more closely resembles actual real-life speech.
Threads here aren't really "subjects" like on a normal forum, they are fast and between fairly few people so they look more like a normal linear conversation which just has a beginning topic with no particular direction. Men like the change the subject a lot. There are a lot of men here.
