this subject is so fucking touchy in Native American studies that smart people don't get into the numbers game. here are the problems
1. there isn't a whole lot of physical archaeological evidence supporting enormous numbers of supposed Native Americans prior to European colonization. the response is that natives used wood, hide, and other materials that decompose easily. even still, finding a refuse pit - which you would assume to be plentiful given such a huge population - is like finding a fucking unicorn.
2. it is generally accepted that Native American groups had close trading networks causing a rapid decline in population when European diseases were introduced, but these didn't strike Western, Plains, or Central/Southern American groups as far as I've seen. most of those killed by disease were on the US East Coast.
3. the main reason liberal academics push the huge numbers is to try and kill off Manifest Destiny.
4. it is nigh impossible to fully know or understand Native American cultures because they were oral cultures and their systems of physical data storage (wampum belts, for example) were known only by upper tier classes who died in wars, disease, or with age.
5. Native Americans were fucking brutal to each other. read up on the Comanches and the fucking cannibalism in the Iroquois creation myth (which IS corroborated by physical archaeological evidence). the idea that Native Americans were peaceful is utter horse shit. the idea that they were all savages, however, is not true and they had a very complex and consistent legal system for a culture that didn't have writing.
6. what European settlers did to the Native Americans doesn't qualify as genocide because it was not as consistent as actual genocides. the US Army didn't march West to specifically kill every last Indian alive. most incidents of violence were sporadic.

this is correct. the Mexica population, especially Aztecs in Central America, did have a metric fuckton of people just by virtue of scale. Tenochtitlan was huge and had really advanced irrigation systems.
the Midwest was not sparsely population. Plains Indians just lived a different lifestyle. for example, the Iroquois migrated between different areas in modern-day NY and OH in the Great Lakes region every few decades. they knew that, eventually, hunting grounds could be hunted to extinction and soil could be exhausted. so, they moved around.
Plains Indians were basically nomadic. only the Aztecs, Inca, and Maya had sedentary lifestyles. even then, many, many, many scholars have suggested that the reason for the incredible violence in Central America with the Spanish and Native Americans is because of food shortages. that's why so many were happy to side with the Spanish and overthrow their rulers, or so the theory goes. considering how many people lived in Tenochtitlan and their proposed food output, it's not that bad of a theory.
the problem with most Native American tribes is they practiced slash-and-burn agriculture, which sucks and exhausts soil very quickly.
it's still fucked up what European colonists did to the Native Americans, but it's nothing new to history. I don't see the Germans apologizing for what their ancestors did in the Baltics, or the Muslims apologizing for Spain and Sicily.
