Genes are just segments of DNA that code for specific proteins. Many white features are caused by lacking a particular protein. White skin, for instance, is caused by the gene for producing melanin being non-functional.
Since you have a copy of each gene passed down from each parent, one copy is all that you need to produce a sufficient amount of a protein to gain the related trait, and if you have a black parent, they will pass down a working copy.
