I'd say America had varying degrees of greatness from the early days of European colonization until the 1980s, and it can't be measured in power, wealth and influence alone.
The expansion westward and the rapid colonization is a triumph in itself, along with its massive influence on popular culture in the mid-20th century.
Imagine visiting any of the large American cities between 1890 and 1960. The fact that all of these cities were relatively new allowed them to explore grand architecture that you couldn't find in the old, historical cities of Europe.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a Norwegian and European patriot, and honestly wouldn't want to live in another country than my own, but it's impossible to deny that the US was a fascinating country with a rich history, particularly between 1850 and up until the last remnants of the old culture died out in the 1980s.
That being said, I have a hard time seeing how America can regain its glory. Trump isn't going to fix anything. At most, he can stem the tide for a few years.
