How can this be logical when the *lack* of a pigment leads to white skin? If we subscribe to the theory of evolution then surely humans would have started out as some vague human-like ancestor with white skin, gradually developing darker skin in order to better adapt to the African environment over thousands of years.

Evolution is not about constantly aquiring characteristics, but about constantly adapting to the enviroment. You might lose or win characteristics to adapt, but in the end the only thing that matters is how well you "fit" in your current enviroment. Take, for example, dolphins, that evolved from wolves (or so is belived). They lost their hair, their legs, and so on and so forth, and aquired other traits, like lubber and fat.
The humans that are belived to have emmigrated from africa probably lost melanin to ensure that they had enough vitamin D to survive low sunlight enviroments, and furthermore aquired more bodilly hair to better conserve their bodily heat.
Don't be buttmad just because the white races probably evolved from niggers, in the end, it ain't about who was first, but who is the best :^)
