Because the establishment was always on Trumps side, there was never a plan for a contested convention.

But it still is not over, Trump IS to push on to get the magiuc number...a presumptive nominee is not the OFFICIAL nominee. But HE WILL get there.

Because Cruz didn't actually care. He's just a politician, and he says whatever seems to get him the most money at the moment.

He did stay in to try to deny Trump the magic number, that was his strategy since at least New York and a few weeks before.
Even that spolier strategy became untenable after Indiana. Turns out normal voters don't like to play wrecker and won't vote like Machiavellian conspirators (which anyone but a professional consultant would realise).
