Basically there's simply not enough people to resist invasion by any country with a larger population no matter what.
Essentially our defense is token. During the cold war maybe it was somewhat meaningful since its purpose was to delay any invaders to wait for help and that form of defense relied on the "mass defense" doctrine we had during the cold war. Basically the entire society would be mobilized for war, off-shore helicopters siezed for military use etc. It would shut down everything just to resist maybe a few months.

You're right but it's not only Scandinavia, our government spends 1.1% GDP on the military. NATO countries should spend 2%, USA is spending 3.4% I believe. So basically USA spends money to defend Europe while the actual European countries don't give a shit about their military.
The only thing our army is about is coping with budget cuts. We have a handful of actual operational F16's. The rest aren't operational due to broken parts and such, even a couple are kept as a donor to keep others operational. All our leopard tanks have been sold or are still for sale (dunno exactly).
Raising taxes won't solve anything, stop spending money on useless things does work (building animal shelters in Romania from Dutch tax money for example).
I really hope Trump becomes president and stops spending money on countries that could easily handle their own safety but simply don't give a fuck.
