My parents live in Marshfield and even though it's a high end town, every person I know is a firefighter, contractor, cop, teacher, nurse, etc. They hunt, fish, boat, hike and backpack, drink heavily and eat good food.

Nope, that's actually what makes them confusing. They are pronounced differently than the cities they're named after, and differently than almost any American English speaker would presume based on phonetics we learn growing up.
Interesting fact that I've heard, but haven't been able to verify. They say that the pure New England accent family is the closest current accent to that which was used across most of Southern England in the 1600's and early 1700's. The accent there has apparently changed while this has remained relatively steady.
