The reason why I stopped paying attention to elections is because once you have a horse in the race, your identity becomes tied up in that candidate. So that candidate's failure or success because YOUR failure or success, which makes it very difficult to think clearly about whether the "real you" would support that person if you were coming in with a fresh perspective.
