Romania can be pretty interesting if you know what you're doing and exercise some caution.
I visited it about a decade ago and one of the first things that really shocked me is that everywhere there's buildings, there's at least one run-down factory. Even if it's a couple sheds nominally calling themselves a village on some editions of the map -- expect a musty bombed out factory next to them. It gets weirder: each and every one of those factories are filled with homeless children, sometimes thousands of them. Even the ones in desolate areas. And they only come out at certain times a day or they get beaten. The "children's hour" varies by region but once they're out they have free run of the "reign" and use their improvised machetes and axes to take what they need from the romanian adults. This is the reason romanians don't like to carry around any kind of money; it's ingrained in them from this ancient romanian tradition.
And the second interesting thing is that the romanians don't use their official currency (too expensive? not sure) but a tiny copper coin/token called a "plot" that's clearly handmade by beating copper wiring with a hammer. I won't speculate on this one.
Any way, it's probably the most intriguing "hidden" country next to North Korea. It's basically 99% offline and has these weird customs and people that have no attachment to the rest of the world. I'm thinking about writing a book on it since I've researched amazon and the great libraries of the world and nothing has ever been written in or about Romania beyond simple fact sheets full of speculations and guesstimates.

Fun Romania fact: street shitting is permitted but it's not like the defecation habits of other third world peoples. It is strictly regulated according to each town's "wise book" which is on display in the central marketplace for anyone to read who can (4.2% literacy rate). The wise book normally contains 2-3 pages on public defecation, which is a big deal as an average wise book consists of about 10-15 pages in total.
One of the main rules for public defecation in Romania is that you have to turn your backside against the nearest tree, and never against crowds. It is however considered acceptable if you turn your poop toward the crowd if it's the result of the custom of "tickle game." Basically, when Romanians see a street shitter, it is considered good luck to tickle them and slap their bottom until they "give up the gold" that is to say, reveal their poop/anus to the humans so previously deprived.
A lot of Romanian folk art revolves around this poop tickle game and defenses against it.

Romanian custom of "oggobooshye" (sp?) - traditional washing of the farmer's vegetables in the city's main gutter to boost people's immune systems in case of a siege from a neighboring town.

Fun fact: Romania once claimed it was a colonial power with possessions in the Americas. When it was found out this was all based on a single rancher with a trace amount of romanian blood they got so embarrassed they refused to change their story and then declared a state of war against half of Europe. The intent was to actually claim some real possessions and save face about the thing, but they couldn't figure out who owned what and where and the war never got underway. 200+ years later the war is still technically on, to the frustration of UN aid workers trying to deliver basic care and foodstuffs to ailing Romanian citizens. Romania has repeatedly refused attempts to legally reenter a state of peace, even when tempted with a free Cessna. The Cessna would have been Romania's first airplane and several politicians were killed by lynch mobs as a result of the refusal.
