Atheism is incompatible with moral absolutism but compatible with moral relativism. There are plenty of moral codes in the atheistic worldview. So one could argue that morality is universal in that aspect (the innate belief of right and wrong), but not that there is a specific moral code that is universal.
Moral relativism is illogical either way though. Either right and wrong exist (i.e. moral absolutism), that you need an absolute moral authority for, because if humans are that authority, right and wrong just becomes a matter of opinion, and opinions are neither right nor wrong, hence it's fundamentally contradictory. Either that or right and wrong doesn't exist at all. Everything is mere actions. Rape is just an action. Slavery, pedophilia, genocide? Mere actions. They are neither right nor wrong.
Either way you look at it, atheism leads to degeneracy because without moral absolutism you can morally justify basically anything.

The transitional fossils are there in the fossil record, but they're incomplete due to the sheer difficulty of finding full specimens, let alone any specimens at all. That's why field works is such an important part of physical anthropology; each fossil is a rare treasure. Species that are millions strong in their heyday leave only a few remnants behind. You should read about the phenomenon called punctuated equilibrium; it explains another reason why transitional fossils are so rare.
