Are sexual orientations other than heterosexuality mental illnesses?
If not, where should we draw the line between them?
Let's consider pedophilia for example.
I argue that pedophiles are not so by choice, as there are no benefits (and many downsides) in having sexual attraction to children, except from getting off if they act on these urges, which they have no control over.
This would lead one to assume that pedophilia is a sexual orientation.
However, such individuals are considered mentally ill and detested by society, which is perfectly understandable as engaging in pedophilic behaviour destroys the lives of the under-aged victims and their loved ones, whereas homesexual behaviour is harmless (except for the increased risk of STIs) and, more importantly, is between consenting adults.
However, there are closet pedophiles who live normal lives, similar to gay men, once upon a time, suppressing their urges and trying to live productively.
Here, I arrive at my point:
If a closet pedophile were to come out for help with his abnormal sexual attractions, he would be treated as a mental patient and given some sort of therapy or treatment.
However, sexual attractions to the same sex, while harmless, can also be classified as abnormal.
