But we did actually achieve our objectives. We forced (essentially through massive indiscriminate bombing until they agreed) the North Vietnamese to the Paris peace talks and secured independence for South Vietnam in 1972.
To ensure this continued independence, the United States agreed to resupply the south with everything it needed to fight a new defensive war.
Problem was, after the treaty, congress consistently backed down on enforcing this reinforcement; why? Because the congress was currently anti-war and many of them had won their elections on an anti-war platform. The Nixon administration at this point was under fire, and was really bound to the will of congress.
So, you had a point where the North were making small incursions into the South to test Southern responses... and we refused to come to their aid. Slowly, but surely they lost the new Vietnam war as the congress pushed the rhetoric that this war was inherently unwinnable.

OP you are a retard. The US lost Vietnam domestically and by not meeting the objective. Tactically, the US wiped the floor when facing the NV and Vietc armies but the end result was still a failure to ensure the South governed the northern province.
Domestically it caused a hatred of the government and military establishment and helped contribute to the counter-culture and cultural - Marxism movement that led to the SJWism of today.
Vietnam was a mistake and huge failure. Nothing was gained from it unless you think testing weapons technology for 10 years helped develop what the military is today

It was argued that if Vietnam fell to the communists that ALL of southeast asia would follow. We backed the democratic leader of the south, and as their ally we sent troops to his aid. One thing led to another and the whole situation escalated with the gulf of Tonkin incident, this incident was played up to give us a reason to flex our military muscle. At some point there was a realization that we backed ass-end into a war we couldn't get out of, and the presidents were trying to com e up with a way to sue for peace. The US demanded that the leader of the south remain, this was the sticking point (much like Assad and Russia now). At some point Nixon launched a bombing campaign that was so overwhelming that it brought the North back to the peace table over night, where they made a bunch of concessions and agreed to a cease fire. During this time we started pulling troops out, and when North realized we were seriously leaving because we didn't have the stomach to fight they launched a massive invasion leading to the fall of the south and an end to our involvement in Vietnam.
They key is to not view history with the lens of today, you'll never understand why things happened that way.
tldr;
French colonialism set the stage, we weren't willing to dump the South's leader as an ally and ended up mired in a war the populace didn't have the stomach for. We were dominating them militarily but the liberal media did everything they could to paint our soldiers as evil baby-killers.
"Peace with honor" was the buzz phrase Nixon used while trying to sue for peace.
The movie: Rambo First Blood is probably a pretty good summary of how America felt about the whole thing.
