I challenge EVERYONE on /pol/ to:

Come up with AND successfully reproduce ANY argument what so ever

The winner gets 500$ added to their paypal.

The winner also gets to share "greatest philosopher" title with the grand philosopher himself, 'Stefan Molyneux'

Good luck and have fun.

how can one argue what is and what isn't an argument?

well we can start by saying if you don't have any facts (statistics, firsthand sources, authentic photo and video proof), then the argument is not an argument and dismissed. even if one has said proof, one's skill of the tongue can dismantle his own argument with his poor word choice. so having strong evidence and good word choice will help your argument. if someone tries to disprove your argument with facts of their own, you must have ample sources to back them up, otherwise your argument is low energy.

in short, have sources and use good wording to help your claim

Task:
Come up with any argument and successfully reproduce it.

Argument:
Let z be an element of C such that z:={a+bi | a,b∈R v i∈C}.
The argument of z then is arg(z)=Φ=arctan(b/a).

Reproduction:
z=5+5i
arg(z)=arctan(5/5)=Ï€/4.

I can reproduce this argument with any number.
Now 500 dollars please.

It is morally correct to abhor violence.
If it is morally correct to abhor violence, then we have a moral obligation to abhor violent entities.
If we have a moral obligation to abhor violent entities, then we have a moral obligation to abhor the state.
Therefore, we have a moral obligation to abhor the state.

your an idiot, but we already knew that.
The meme, is pointing out when someone makes an assertion (a claim lacking either evidence or a logical chain from premise to conclusion) rather than an argument,

It's not just randomly saying not an argument to things you disagree with, it's attempting to point out that most people do not even know what an argument is, let alone do they know a good argument from a bad one.

Thanks for being a perfect example of exactly what the not an argument meme, is attempting to call attention to, people who lack the ability to think, but like to pretend they can.

Again, thanks for the laugh.

Does this tactic every actually work for you?

I mean, i don't know whether to laugh, or to feel bad for you...

The amount of projection and reliance on ad-homs would be bad enough. But combine that with your stunning in ability to process even basic logic, let alone actual arguments. I almost feel obligated to go back to basics with you, and try and lay out what an actual argument consists of, how you can recognize and differentiate between an argument and an assertion, just so you can actually participate in adult conversations...

But who am i kidding, if you had the capacity for independent thought, you would have shown some signs by now...

Apparently, someone needs to explain a lot more than just how to "meme" to you...
Way to change the subject though!
If you post something like the "not an argument" meme, (especially on the page where it originated) you might want to take the time to actually make sure the post your replying to is actually not an argument.

" Nothing you just said was an argument, and nothing Stef said was an argument either."

First off, as stated earlier, Stefan's correction was indeed an argument, as it was pointing out that the standard being applied, does not actually apply to the category in question (terrorists). That is an argument. And also a correct one at that.

Case and point, you appear to be the one who is attempting to appear smart, and failing miserably.

(at least you correctly identified that my post was not an argument, make sure to congratulate yourself for getting at least something right!)

My post was pointing out the irony in someone using the "not an argument meme" when they don't even understand how to differentiate an argument from an assertion. Which is made even richer by the fact that you were attempting to "use" that meme on Stefan, who is largely responsible for it's becoming a meme.

But please by all means, throw out some more ad-hominems, since that clearly demonstrates your grasp of the topics at hand, cheers, and thanks for a laugh,

in case you didn't realize it, Stef's point that the standard being applied to the terrorists, does not apply to terrorists, (the Geneva Convention), is a clear rebuttal to the claim that waterboarding terrorists is against the Geneva Convention. In short, it is an argument, and a concise and correct one too boot.

If your going to use the whole "not an argument" meme, make sure you can at least correctly identify an argument.

Are you kidding me? Thermometers? Dolphins and Thermometers are completely unrelated? If you have a problem with your Thermometer why would you trust a Dolphin to solve it? OK buddy a Thermometer detects the temperature and dolphins are sea mammals. You cannot expect a Dolphin to gauge the temperature with any sort of accuracy. We should just nuke the ocean.

I don't think you understand. While you laugh at us because we do not construct decent arguments, we laugh at you because you assume that some thread about an awful meme is a stage for advanced disscussion. You are mistaken. This thread is a joke and should be recognised as such. The 'not an argument' posters do so in irony. They do not believe that 'not an argument' is a sufficent rebuttal of your point, friendo.

My criticism would be.... that none of these are actually arguments. You're just asking questions. You have to pick a side to argue.

You would have to say: since many people regard the bible as simple literature as opposed to dependable historical writings... shouldn't it be filed in the fiction section of the library?

Or

I argue that you can cry underwater since since it's an involuntary exclamation of emotion that can be experienced and recognised by others, regardless of how much water is on your face.
