I know the Germany parallels is a tired meme, but it's what I've studied the most and I think it applies to other breakdowns of democracy. Back then one side became violently radicalized, either the communists or the authoritarian right, because they felt threatened by the other side. The other side would see their opponents violence and radicalization as justification for the same. Radicalized people lose faith in democracy because they fear it will allow the "wrong" side to gain power, and eventually you end up with an anti-democratic political atmosphere.
I'd be interested in finding less tired analogies than the German one, but I think the logic is sound.
