Based on a uniform swing across all seats, we can expect that if an election were held tomorrow, Labor would win office or we would have another hung parliament.

Yeah, Turnbull was popular because he was a pragmatic moderate who supported some left wing policies, so was capturing the swing vote. Only problem is that when he knifed Abbott, it seems the silver lining offered from the party room was to keep Abbott's policies and policy direction and not have any more same-sex marriage talk or support climate change initiatives.
When the evidence came out it was Tony with a new face and no new policy direction, the electorate lost faith and Liberal party support soured.
