This chart isn't how many people were playing in NA, it's how many were playing globally. It doesn't account for the fact that during NA's WOTLK era, a LARGE percentage (like half) of the playerbase were Chinese, and WOTLK was NOT out in China while it was in NA. I'm not that guy but I began playing WOTLK like a few weeks after it dropped as a prot warrior and going through the expansion on a high pop role play server, I encountered almost nobody until Zul'Drak, and most of the people I encountered there were doing dailies or the Arena of Anal. I don't remember enjoying Grizzly Hills all that much, the quest chains didn't really add up or culminate too well, for me the most memorable quests were Drakaru's (which mostly didn't take place in Grizzly Hills) and the Harrison Jones quest where he rescues you.
I don't take issue with this, I prefer my quest areas more desolate which is why I don't like playing the game during launch (I did for WoD because I was in a competitive raid environment and I really didn't like it.)
The only zone I really remember fondly from WOTLK was Zul'Drak and Icecrown, but Icecrown got tiresome quick when they added the Argent Tourney, which was like Quel'Danas minus the side-splittingly hilarious pvp antics.
To me, WOTLK established a lot of bad habits. Currency grinding, long-winded daily hubs, easy but tedious dungeon farming with strangers, repetitive solo rep farming required for raiding (Sons of Hodir holy shit), and quests being easy and hand-holdy.

Cataclysm is when I was in my prime. I was in a top raiding guild on my realm, I was having a great time pvping, I had a lot of the good Cata mounts including the sandstone drake, I was kicking ass and it felt easy.
Then when WoD rolled around raiding was REALLY fucking hard and I can't decide if I changed or if it's actually harder.
