Basically they put all their chips on oil and oil prices hit rock bottom. Now their entire economy which wasn't diversified at all is fucked. The government is incredibly inept and everything they touch goes to shit; go figure.
It's funny, my dad was telling me the other day about his trip to Venezuela a few weeks back and how depressing it was. There's a lot of good land in Venezuela, it's not just the oil that's valuable. They could turn a lot of it into farm land. Apparently back in the day those land owners he works for, use to own huge hectares of land in Venezuela which they used for grazing. They had a special breed of Texas long horn cattle that they brought over and was very successful in Venezuela. They use to compete with Argentina and the U.S. when it came to beef products.
Then the socialist cancer hit and now they are so fucked that no entrepreneurs would want to start a business there. The roads are shit, there's not enough rubber for tires, so they can't even get trucks to haul goods. It would be a logistical nightmare to start business there. The government can't fix its most basic problems because it's run by idiots who have no idea what they are doing and they are broke.

Oil prices where still high and Iranians and Cubans were helping them. Oil prices started to drop a couple of years after Chavez died.
Venezuela is basically their own fucking fault. An interesting book, "Legacy of Ashes," is a very long account of CIA work there in "the dirty wars" of the 80s/90s but none of that has happened for a long time.
It's pretty amazing when you read in mainstream, respected sources what the CIA has done. Would never have believed it.

Socialism (at least the Bolivian kind) doesn't happen all at once. It happens very gradually until nothing work anymore. When Chavez was elected, he started his nationalizing spree. First it was with oil, but then it went to the farms and factories of various industries. This was given to cronies to maintain political power and to enrich himself. These businesses failed as these owners had no idea what they were doing. Legitimate business had to comply with new laws, crime, and corruption that was increasing.
Fortunately, oil band-aided a lot of these problems. However, this wasn't even enough towards the end of Chavez's life. The government expenditures were eventually outpacing oil revenues before he died. Maduro got left holding the bag when oil to decline in price.

Dead for the time being. This man is in his 80s and is getting his wealth all gathered up so he can give it away. He's kind of out of the game and even mentions that in the article. So tell me if oil is dead then what happens in 2017 when production declines in the USA and there is another supply problem in the global markets? Prices go up and USA starts drilling again. We are already in the $40s and it wont be long until we get back above $60/barrel. This will always happen in cycles until we come up with a different energy source that is as efficient and useful as oil is.
