Once these college kids graduate; the ones that do get decent jobs won't be socialism lovers anymore (they'll move center-left or to the right). People need time to digest an idea and they form opinions based on rumour, myth, association, and familiarity.
Most of America did not know who Cruz or Kasich or Sanders were before the election. You might think they *ought* to have known about these people. But the vast majority didn't.
Hillary is well well known. Democrats who don't update their political knowledge more than once every 5 years vote for her.
Most of America knows Trump because of his brands and obviously his TV show. Trump has also run in the past, so the idea is not new. Kasich almost ran, but no one remembers. TV is still god, but waning. Internet not yet. On top of that, there's also this hilarious belief that Trump brand = quality goods. Like kids talking on the playground about how pop-rocks and coke will make your stomach explode. But it's a real belief, part of the zeitgeist.
So, while there are millions of people who keep track of shit, there are more who don't. There are enough people keeping track of shit to fill stadiums. Sanders supporters know that they also have to do this to overcome name recognition. So they show up. But a passionate few are beaten by the lazy majority.
