Don't use tutorials, read the in-game tooltips, hover your mouse over everything to learn about it.
Best start with a large European land power, like Russia, Germany or France. Once you understand the basics, play as Union of Britain and learn how navy (CVs kill everything), airforce and naval invasions work.
Remaining "interesting nations" at the game start are all fun choices for a medium-experienced player, although Canada and National France really require having good luck with what the AI does.

There was a game called War Leaders: Clash of Civilizations which was supposed to be a mixture of GSG and RTS. You could play as one of the main states of WWII (including Hitler's Germany). It looked promising, but they fucked it up.
Anyway, I really enjoyed the Blitzkrieg series, World In Conflict: Soviet Assault, HoI and Age of Empires games. For fun I recomment Overlord and IS Defense.

The general idea is Germany won WW1, managed to stop the Bolsheviks but couldn't stop a socialist uprising in Britain and France.
The makers put a lot of thought into how the world might play out. So the Commune of France isn't just the Soviet Union in France, socialism developed along French and British philosophies rather than Russian. Hence "Syndicalism" rather than Communism. They start out more democratic than Russia but you can steer them in that direction.

I have enjoyed Vicky2, CK2, and EU3. I liked Victoria for a while, but lost interest because of the railroading (kek). CK2 was great fun, but since Poostan was introduced things have steadily been going downhill. The constant dlc (portraits, music, units) drove me nuts and didn't help at all. EU3 was a fucking blast except for the horde mechanics which were retarded as fuck. I played maybe two or three games of vanilla EUIV but I wasn't a big fan of the mana system and haven't picked it up since.
Grand strategy is even better when you have friends to play with though.

Read Edward Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," not only is his shit extremely accurate and detailed, but he is also a fantastic storyteller.
