Startpage very simply put acts as a proxy between you and jewggle. You won't have to look at jewggle, they won't get any data from you, but the results are the same except not tailored to your IP.
DDG is (maybe) not as biased as jewggle, but it is also hosted in the US. That means that anything you search can and probably will be accessed by some agency or whatever at some point. No matter what, DDG will most likely bow down to pressure from within the country, that much I can promise.
Startpage on the other hand can't be touched as easily by greedy Feds.

The most popular ones that I could find with a quick search, at least. Sure you can go deeper and find better stuff, but it's not exactly necessary most of the time.

95% of the time it's not relevant at all. It starts being a problem when you value your privacy and Jewggle opens up everything you ever searched for the Feds.
The other part are marketing concerns: You get tailored ads, maybe even filtered results, if your provider is a cunt.
Think of it like that: Everytime you don't visit jewggle and use DDG or Startpage instead, jewggle looses money and unique traffic-data.
The truly most efficient way would be to just use a proper proxy everytime you use a big site like google who are known to sell out to everybody who asks.
At least until using proxys is outlawed. Who knows when that will start being a thing...
