Is it taboo in your country to make eye contact with people during conversation? Especially strangers.

Here in Britain it's quite common to look away if someone looks you directly in the eyes.

And I'm not just talking about autists and aspies, this effects most people, old and young.
>>
In public and randonly you look away but if you speak acknowledge someone you obviously look at them

>Is it taboo in your country to make eye contact with people during conversation?
wat

Why would you not make eye contact?
>>
>>72342505

In many countries, including my own, eye contact is often considered a personal violation, like standing too close to someone in public.
>>
>>72341502
Only to gyppos. Don't make eye contact with gyppos.
>>
>>72341502
Not, it's actually encouraged, but I'm pretty damn insecure so I tend to look away. In my native Mexico (yeah yeah, go back, build wall, I know) males and females always kiss on the cheek and when I go visit there it's kind of uncomfortable, especially if it's somebody attractive and their husband is right there

I've tend to noticed people in the southern hemisphere seem be a lot less socially awkward then those in the northern hemisphere, like Swedes and Finns for example.

Here you usually spend like 30% of the conversation looking in the eyes, the rest of the time you're looking away. Some people try to look you in the eyes all time, but that's just super creepy. Looking away all the time is also creepy.
>>
>>72343744
Basically this in Sweden too.
>>
>>72342852
No, it really isn't.
>>
>>72341502
Apparently in Sweden men are not supposed to look at women. Not even making this up. An American friend who lived there said it's a hangover from the Lutheran days.

in the USA, eye contact in conversations is a sign of respect -- it's disrespectful for someone to look away when you're talking to them.
NOTE: the opposite is true in spic culture -- it's disrespectful for spics to look a person in the eye when spoken to by someone in authority, like a teacher or cop. This difference in culture causes confusion. For instance, if a White cop is talking to some Mexican kids, they might not look him in the eyes, which will annoy the cop because he'll feel disrespected. At the same time, the spics are afraid to look him in the eye because that would be "challenging" him. Hope this makes sense.
>>
>>72343720
>randomly look at him a few times
Why?
>suddenly stares at me for about 10 seconds as if to take revenge
I would do the same.
>>
I'm not aware of any actual taboos, but I am socially awkward, so eye contact must be a constant conscious effort.

I make an effort to look at someone when they're speaking to me directly, but when I'm talking or answering I will mostly look away and just glance quickly to make sure the person is following what I'm saying.

Eye contact is always alpha because it's difficult to maintain and goes against instinct but shows focus and determination to whoever you're speaking to.

Anyone who says that it "goes against culture" is so fucking introverted and narcissistic that they think they are projecting their communication problems on all of society.

In the US it's considered odd if you don't make eye contact
>>
>>72344149
I've never heard of the eye contact thing, but it's true that in Mexico a lot of emphasis is put on being respectful to your elders and to people of authority like teachers and police etc. We even have different pronouns for people that are your age and acquaintances, and people that are older than you or in a position of authority (tu, usted)

>taboo to make eye contact during conversation

There's a difference between talking to someone and talking at someone. Whether or not there is eye contact can be the difference to actually see if they're listening or if they only hear you.
>>
If you smile at strangers while walking by they might think you are crazy
>>
5-1. Look them in the eyes for 5 seconds then pause for 1 second looking to something else (or laughing away). Eyecontact is confidence but keeping it too long makes it seem to forced sometimes. Making it akward at times.

If you, however, wanna show dominance you keep staring someone in the eyes.

Look in one eye only.

Not making eyecontact in a conversation or watching away when someone makes eyecontact suddenly is a sign of vulnerability. Making you seem weak.
>>
Maybe this is the problem over there. No personal connection. I dont stare into peoples eye duribg convo but its weird to never have eye contact. I never really think about, looking at someone is normal.
>>
>>72345436
>5 seconds

I don't look at anything for 5 seconds unless I want to fuck it.
>>
>making eye contact
How the fuck do you guys do it? That shit is impossible for me.
>>
>>72345213

>>
>>72341502

No, it's considered rude not to. Looking someone in the eyes during a conversation is polite, indicates you're paying attention and normal.

Only emotionally handicapped people have issues with eye contact during a conversation.
>>
>>72345213
A nation of autistic people.

I just use a stopwatch during conversations. So whenever I need to talk to someone, like during a job interview, I just pull out this special stopwatch I bough, its basically like a normal stopwatch, but it gives a little beep at whatever time interval you set it, so I set it to beep every 5 seconds so I look the other person in the eye for 5 seconds, then I look away for 1-2 seconds (I count this in my head), then back to the person but you need to reset the stopwatch.

So far this worked well.
>>
>>72345615
Stare in one eye only and when the other one is talking keep a little smile. Just do it it's not a hard thing to do. Just do it with friends and family and you'll eventually automatically do it.

Wrong faggot. You look at both eyes. If you only look at one eye you will appear slightly crosseyed.

I'm not saying you have to do it. But body language and eyecontact are keys to showing confidence. And, well, confidence is key to a lot of things like you without a doubt know.

It has become so in the white community but we're working to undo that slowly. It starts by actually calling people out when they're on their phones or inattentive during a conversation.

Autistic people have problems respecting personal spaces around people though. If anything we scandinavians the normal ones with our 5ft personal space.

Most people in the Netherlands look each other in the eye a lot to assure whether or not you are a worthy trade partner.

Not only this, but I always get a sense of dishonesty from people who constantly look around or down when I'm talking to them. It's like they're not being genuine
>>
>>72345843
You have to be sure to synchronize your watches. Because what if the other person looks away for 2 seconds while you're staring at them for 5 seconds?

You're only maintaining 3 seconds of constant eye contact, if they look away while you're looking at them and then you look away while they're looking at you that can reduce it as far as only 1 second of eye contact.
>>
>>72346328
Eh, as long as there is space enough that you could theoretically stretch your arms straight out and spin in a circle without touching another person I feel that my personal space is being respected. At least if I'm inside/enclosed. Outside a few good strides away is enough though.

I work in customer service and I kind of make it a game. I look them directly in the eye, and if they look away, I know that they're a little bitch and I win.

As a burger, you greet everyone you meet. You also ask them about their day, and make sure they'll still packing. Almost always accompanied by a "GOOOOD JAAAHHB" and a raucous applause.
>>
>>72347422
Hoverhanding is an awkward beta thing, not necessarily something autists do.
>>
>>72348242
Yeah but if you look closely, you'll see that in recent years the lines have been blurred between the definition of an autism spectrum disorder and just being a very awkward beta.
>>
You'd be considered retarded here if you didn't keep strong eye contact
>>
>>72348242

Hoverhanding is a recent phenomenon because these days you could be accused of sexual assault for just accidentally brushing a girls ass with her hand.

The eye contact thing is a long-standing taboo, rooted in cultures of several countries. I think Japan and Korea are other countries which also have the eye contact taboo. Could someone from these countries confirm this?
