It's single action which means you have to cock back the hammer every time you fire. I assume you're not going to be loading it when you need it. Storing black powder like that I'm not sure it would keep well. I don't recommend you use it for self defense. If you do then keep it in a dehumidifier box and still do frequent reloading. Having to rely on that isn't a very good idea.

I think for home defense a simple revolver of some nature is fine. You're not looking to really put in range time outside of some rounds to get use to shooting the gun.
