Why do people think this is cute?
I see kikebook posts of people melting over cute down syndrome babies, calling them beautiful angels etc.
However, what bothers me is that none of these people would even spend a day around somebody like this, when they reach say 13 years old, nobody wants to be around them anymore, they aren't cute anymore, they're disfigured and awkward and smell bad, and nobody likes them.
I pity these people, this could've happened to any one of us, but it doesn't make it right to lie to them constantly when you aren't willing to even look at them in the eye.

I don't think they're normal, and they shouldn't be treated as normal, because they'd be living in a lie.

But he was okay. He could work fine, he never did anything wrong, he wasn't particularly slower than anyone else.

The reason Down's Syndrome kids are treated with more respect than kids with other types of disorders is, first and foremost, they're capable of leading normal lives. They can do simple jobs when they grow up (assuming some asshole like OP doesn't come along to cockblock them), and some of them can even do normal jobs.
The secondary reason is as you say - they are cute kids. They are usually smiling because, why not? It's true the cuteness wears off, but the cuteness wears off of ALL kids.

I work with people with with Down's syndrome. It is not 'cute'. It's very difficult for them.
They have a range of problems. I'll list some of them: no ability to register when they've eaten and are full - they will eat all the time if given the opportunity.
They have a sense of separation from the rest of us 'normal' people and it's tragic to have empathy with them when they feel that way.
They have a problem with their necks and often spine.
They die young - usually in their 40s. Or earlier.
Down's is a spectrum. I look after some who can't speak or perform simple tasks such as washing or having a shower. Some are higher functioning and communicate well.
As a carer I have to understand each individual person and specific needs.
Really the saddest thing for me is that society in general doesn't treat them as fellow human beings.
It's either excessive sympathy or rejection. I do my best to make life as normal as I can for them.
I have kids and they are 'normal'. My dog and cat are 'normal'. Down's syndrome is not a singular thing. It is a wide variety of deviation from what is considered normal.
My opinion is simple. They were born on this planet - same as myself, wife and kids. So they have rights to exist in peace and explore their identities. Down's sufferers are just as complicated as you or I.

disagree on the smell, but I feel similar. I've even willingly volunteered as a camp counselor for handicapped kids several times and helped out at school fundraisers and functions for them, and deep down inside I still feel deeply repelled by handicapped kids in general. I'm still not entirely sure why I put myself through it; it's not guilt, maybe morbid fascination. You spend some time helping kids who can't even poop without a thousand-dollar harness and you start to appreciate basic things like being able to walk straight and talk clearly. I guess it's like my irregular version of helping at a soup kitchen during Thanksgiving/Xmas.
Downs are often the least handicapped overall, and that's a good thing. They make the most of their missing genetic material, and have the best combination of self-awareness, cognitive ability and full-body motor function out of many other disabilities. If the parents care and force them through helpful therapy and special schools that cater to their needs early on, they catch up to normies pretty well and can make adequate farmhands or minimum wage workers. Probably the easiest to socialize with too, if you can tolerate the speech impediments.
I rank them up there with midgets, teach them a trade and put them to work and they'll carry their own weight, more than I can say for some fatties who should otherwise be normal.

I'm no geneticist, but removing the common insult from the term "mongoloid" for the moment it's probably a set of features that amounts to a default settings in people when there's a genetic fuckup. Had to doublecheck and remind myself that Downs is an EXTRA chromosome 21(the smallest one btw), so there's extra genetic noise in the formation of the body. It's not so much as to pitying retards, but people with downs can do dishes, fold clothes, do labor, feed animals, and harvest crops.

i have a cousin with down syndrome. not fun. shes 10 years old and hasn't learnt to speak a single fucking word, shits herself constantly, and is completely oblivious to the most in your face stuff you can imagine (she once burned her hand on the underside of a portable barbecue and didn't even scream until 10 minutes later, where everyone flipped the fuck out because they had no idea what was going on).
but here is the thing with children, down syndrome, and people thinking they are cute; it is empathetic cuteness. they are cute (and i use that term loosely) because they are completely helpless and unable to care for themselves. babies are cute because they are helpess and cant fend for themselves. kittens are cute for the same reasons. theres also a bunch of weird criteria that "cute things" fall under that makes them such (generally round features, disproportionately large eyes and extremities compared to adults etc.)
i feel sorry for her parents though. while they are idiots in every sense of the word, they tried there god damned hardest to help with downs. by god they even had regular hospital and psychological check ups for her, but downs is like autism. they spent thousand on her, and what happened? she learnt 1 phrase when she was 7 (i think it was "no want"), then forgot it 2 years later. and the issue is she can never be a functioning member of society. she will just be a drain on the family's money and life until they die.
the worst bit is when the she has a birthday. you just have to pretend you care, and pretend you appreciate the family for putting up with it, but really i just wish i didn't have to see her every week. i can handle an autistic kid. sure they are stupid, but the can learn and be funny from time to time.. down syndrome? whats so funny? do they learn? how come they dont stop breathing when they blink? they are an enigma of developmental deformity, even among schizophrenics and the like.

A gaggle of them live in some sheltered accomodation and I used to go o meetings to sort their shit out. One guy kept putting the clock in the recycling bin, every 2 weeks. Another guy shares the bin point for some reason and is pissed off, so I hold a meeting and discuss the problem. Downs look at me blankly... 'the woman before brought pictures and games and things'. I apologize and leave. Never return, there's no point talking to them.

We used him as minion, he would do anything we wanted.
He hit other kids for us, he insulted grown ups we hated, he even stealed candy for us.
